In this manual: Machine Controller

Connecting to Wi-Fi

Setup mode, joining WPA2-Personal and WPA2-Enterprise (campus) networks, and linking the controller to a machine.

A controller with no stored Wi-Fi credentials — brand new, or after a Wi-Fi reset — boots into SETUP MODE and advertises itself to the MakerOps mobile app. All setup happens from the app over an encrypted local session; the controller never exposes an open configuration page.

Join a network

  1. Stand near the controller and open the MakerOps app as a staff member with equipment permissions.
  2. Add a controller from the equipment area; the app finds nearby controllers by their MO-… name.
  3. Pick your Wi-Fi network from the scan (or choose Other network to type a hidden SSID) and enter the password. The controller tests the connection immediately and reports back to the app.

If a join attempt gets stuck — usually a mistyped password — hold STOP for about five seconds on the controller’s setup screen. It wipes the attempted credentials and restarts setup mode cleanly.

Campus networks (WPA2-Enterprise / 802.1X)

The controller supports WPA2-Enterprise networks of the username-and-password kind (PEAP/MSCHAPv2 — the shape used by most campus and eduroam-style networks). The app detects enterprise networks in the scan automatically; Other network has a WPA2-Enterprise toggle for hidden SSIDs.

  • Enter the account username and password your IT department issued for the device.
  • Some networks route logins through an outer identity (also called anonymous identity), common on eduroam realms. Leave it blank unless your IT department says otherwise — blank means “same as the username.”
  • Networks that require a client certificate installed on the device (EAP-TLS, “install a profile first”-style onboarding) are not currently supported.

MAC registration: many campus networks require the device’s MAC address to be registered before it may join. The controller’s Wi-Fi MAC is printed right on the SETUP MODE screen (and later on the admin menu’s NETWORK STATUS page) — give that to your network team.

Once online, the controller must be bound to a piece of equipment in your MakerOps space:

  1. On the controller, hold STOP to open the admin menu and select SHOW BINDING QR.
  2. Scan the QR with the MakerOps app and choose the machine this controller runs.

From then on the idle screen shows that machine’s name, and everything else — session rules, timers, who may start it — is managed from the platform. See Machine access in the platform manual.

Moving to a different network later

Open the admin menu (hold STOP on the idle screen) and select WIFI SETUP. The controller erases its stored credentials — including any enterprise username and password — and reboots into setup mode. The admin menu opens even when the controller can’t reach its old network, so a unit moved to a new building can always be re-provisioned in place.
